One of Poland's most prominent reporters and non-fiction authors. His books, including Schodów się nie pali, Like Eating a Stone: Surviving Post-War Bosnia, Dzisiaj narysujemy śmierć, Wściekły pies, Pianie kogutów, płacz psów, Historia na śmierć i życie and Pożegnanie z Narwią (co-authored with Hanna Krall) provoked lively debate and almost immediately entered the canon of Polish reportage. He has been a finalist twice for both the Nike Literary Award and the Angelus Central European Literature Award. He won the Premio Kapuściński in Rome and the ‘Pen of Hope’ award from Amnesty International. Tochman’s work has gained international acclaim and has been translated into over a dozen languages.
